Edith van Dijk wil naar de Olympische Spelen

27-08-2007: Edith van Dijk pakt haar zwemloopbaan weer op. De 34-jarige zesvoudig wereldkampioene in het open water en sportvrouw van het jaar 2005 wil zich eind mei 2008 kwalificeren voor de Olympische Spelen volgend jaar in Peking.

“Ik heb de Spelen nooit meegemaakt, nu de kans er is, wil ik die toch pakken,’’ aldus Edith. De 10 km in het open water is in Peking voor het eerst een Olympisch nummer.

Edith beëindigde in 2005 met twee gouden en een bronzen medaille haar loopbaan na de WK van 2005 in Montreal. Ze ging daarna aan de slag als bondscoach open water, maar legde die functie eerder dit jaar neer, omdat ze haar diverse werkzaamheden niet meer kon combineren. “Het ging bij mezelf toch weer kriebelen, helemaal toen ik in maart in Melbourne was als bondscoach open water. Ik ben er daarna over gaan praten met mensen als Ada Kok, Peter Post en Jacco Verhaeren. Ik heb uiteindelijk besloten er toch weer voor te gaan.’’

Aangezien Edith, afgezien van de periode rond de geboorte van haar dochter, al die tijd met succes is blijven trainen, begon ze na te denken over een rentree. Edith hakte de knoop definitief door na een succesvolle testwedstrijd, zaterdag in Wenen. In die wereldbekerwedstrijd werd ze derde achter Martina Grimaldi (Ita) en Angela Maurer (Dui) en kreeg daardoor de bevestiging dat ze nog altijd mee kan met de top. "Ik ben verbaasd dat het zo goed ging”, gaf Edith na haar race toe. Met haar derde plaats in Wenen heeft ze zich al zo goed als verzekerd van een deelnamebewijs voor de WK van mei 2008, waar ze kwalificatie voor Peking kan afdwingen. Daarvoor moet Edith op de WK bij de eerste 10 eindigen.

Tijdens de persconferentie vanmiddag in Wognum gaf Edith aan dat ze de laatste 4 wedstrijden van de lopende wereldbekercyclus aan zich voorbij laat gaan. “Drie van de vier wedstrijden vinden in Azië plaats en ik kan die tijd beter besteden aan training. Ik kan nog goed mee, maar heb logischerwijs wel wat achterstand opgelopen en heb het nodige aan kracht verloren. Ook merk ik dat ik nog wat versnellingsvermogen tekort kom.”

Edith gaat tijdens de trainingen weer samenwerken met haar schoonvader Jaap van Goor; echtgenoot Hans neemt de coaching voor zijn rekening. "Ik ga het weer doen met mijn oude vertrouwde team". Edith stopt met haar werk en legt zich volledig toe op het zwemmen. "Ik wil er wel helemaal voor gaan en dan kan ik er niets anders meer bij doen."

My thoughts on Van Gogh?Was he brave, foosilh, crazy-brave or full of hubris?I don't know, but I like to think that he knew he was taking a suicidal stance. If he was collaborating with Hirsi Ali (sp?), then there is no way he couldn't have an idea of possible consequences. There is no middle ground in this battle. If it meant that my daughter gained her freedom from my death or incarceration, it would be worth it. She will not grow up in the shackles of Multiculturalism, Political Correctness or Dhimmitude. /apologies for the rant.Please note, I have no intention of going postal on the next muslim to cross my path. :D That would be a stupid thing to do. However, if there were some way of combatting the evil that is Islam, I am more than willing to take up arms. For now, I keep a low profile, educate myself and attempt to educate others.
